The Pile - New InsideWoodland Feature

Hello Woodland!

Another new thing here at InsideWoodland...and no, it is not a video this time. (Which is a good thing because my face is still numb.)

This time around we're bringing a new Homepage For The City.   We've got blog entries, news stories, classified ads, real estate listings and more.  Actually, all we have is links to this stuff, but it's all compiled in one place that's easy to get to- and updated every 20 minutes.

So check it out...we did this for you, so enjoy.  It's just another piece of home-grown time-wasting crap from InsideWoodland- the only site in town creating original stuff for you to use.

Go to: http://thepile.org/

(And check out the classifieds, there is some good stuff out there.)

IWTV At The Fair

InsideWoodland Television returns for Episode Two!

This week, we are at the Yolo County Fair.

We've got:

  • NASCAR information
  • Sliding
  • Wrasslin'
  • Shiny Disco Balls
  • Washing the Bull

Watch the video here:

http://insidewoodland.com/playepisode2.html

On the technical side, I've made a few changes to make things look/sound a whole lot better.

Important! I've also made the video HUGE.  This may load a little slower for some of you.  If you have problems with the video 'stuttering' then just hit the pause button and wait a minute.  After that the video should play fine.

Please comment on what you think about the video.

Thanks-

And if you haven't done it yet- watch the video!

Save Money at Grocery Outlet

When I was in my early twenties, I was fairly poor.  So poor, that I had to buy a lot of my clothes at the thrift-store.  I used to rush in and out of the store, hoping no one would see me.  One day I was in the thrift store with a stack of shirts across my arm, and I noticed a woman next to me.  Actually, I noticed nice legs and a short skirt was next to me.  So I looked up to see the rest. (And to make sure it really was a woman...this was Los Angeles after all)

Oh crap- I knew her.  In fact, I knew her from work. And she was looking right at me.

I'm sure I looked like an idiot, stammering, trying to think of how I could pretend I wasn't in a thrift-store with an armful of clothes I would be wearing the next week.  So I said, "Oh hey...I don't really shop here..."  She said to me, "Umm, I shop here. So what's the big deal?"  I thought to myself, "Yeah, what is the big deal.  If a hot chick like this shops here, then it is no big deal."  Then I thought, "Hmm...I wonder if she would go out with me...."  (No.)

Fast forward about 18 years, and I still love to buy things at discount.  That is where Grocery Outlet comes in.

Grocery Outlet is on Main Street between OSH a

Celebrating 35 Years of Service

Douglass Middle School, and the Owens family, invites you to come celebrate 35 years of service in honor of Chuck Owens.  Mr. Owens joined the staff at Douglass Middle School in 1972.  He taught Ag and was involved in Future Farmers of America for his first 11 years.  After that, he took over the Woodshop classes, and has been teaching Woodshop ever since.  Mr. Owens has had the privilege of teaching generations of Middle School students in Woodland.

The public is invited to come out to Gibson Mansion and help us send Mr. Owens out in style.  Ludy's will be catering, and we will be offering a no-host bar.  Non-alcoholic drinks will be free, compliments of the Owens family.  In addition, we are planning a roast for Mr. Owens. &nb

For Closure

There are two types of people in this world. Those who pay interest, and those who earn interest. This more than anything else determines the flow of wealth in our society.

And generally the reason people keep paying interest is because they want instant gratification.

A little while ago I did a story about some of the new Centex homes out in Spring Lake. Some of the people who read the story thought that I was trying to say that the houses were ugly, without charm, etc. That wasn't it. I actually really like the houses. They're big, have beautiful kitchens and tons of things my current house does not have.

What I was trying to say was that the houses are expensive- beyond the means of most people in Woodland. Even with all of the discounts, free options, and the other incentives, they are not cheap.

So why revisit this story?

Right now every news agency is flooded with stories about houses being foreclosed on. Some news outlets are calling this a tragedy, painting the homeowners as 'vicitms.' I was watching a show just yesterday about a woman named Maria whose family has a combined income of $75,000. She was in tears because her $500,000 home is being foreclosed on.

More 4-H Pictures

Here are some more pictures of the 2007 Yolo County 4-H Show held at the Yolo County Fair Grounds.

I didn't show this year in 4-H, but will be showing for Pioneer FFA at the Yolo County Fair in August. So, my dad and I had time to take these pictures.

I took pictures of lamb showmanship and market class.

I also have some pictures in there of the cattle show too.

My younger brother took first in showmanship novice, my two sisters each took 2nd and 3rd in novice class as well.

Tomorrow will be the auction at 1:00 pm.

Scottish Games & Festival Revisited

Mr. Inside Woodland has covered the Scottish Games on the old incarnation of the Inside Woodland site, and you might think "seen one, seen 'em all." Not so! I have been to the Scottish Games a handful of times before and had a great time. This time, with camera in hand, I hoped to capture some of the essense of this Annual Festival which is sponsored by the Caledonian Club of Sacramento.

First of all, Mr. Inside Woodland provided me with some passes so that I could provide some perspective for the readers. We got there around 11:00 today and saw this long line going down Gibson Road at the Gate. Lucky us -- our golden ticket got us right in!

The first stop was the Dog Agility Demonstrations. If you know anything about me it's that I love dogs, so this was a good stop. Border collies are frequently featured at the fairgrounds for various events and they're a lot of fun to watch!

Check out the concentration of this doggy named Ladybug. She was really focused on herding these ducks through a gate.  She was even able to do the same for other animals, like a cow and a cockatiel.  Check out some more pictures of the dog action below:

Speaking of animals - we noticed that people enjoy wearing dead animals on their kilts. He

The passing of a Talented Musician

Woodland has lost one of our most talented musician, Mr. Jay Swain. You may not have known Jay by name, but if you've seen Rocky and the Revellettes or Grooveline in the past 3 or 4 years, you've seen Jay. He was an extraordiary bass player, with smooth as silk vocals. Jay suffered from health problems associated with his diabetes and passed away last night. We're gonna miss you Jay!

Need to lose weight?

Are you overweight?  I know I am.  And I intend to do something about it.

I am looking for contestants for a new contest.  Something like a "Woodland's Biggest Loser."  Instead of being on television, the entire thing would be played out right here on InsideWoodland in a special section I create for the site.

This is real!

The contest will be run during the month of May.  I am hoping for at least 5 contestants, all of whom are at least 15 pounds overweight.  I want a mix of guys and girls, so please, don't be embarrassed to join!

In order to be a contestant, you need to be willing to do the following:

  • Attend an initial weigh-in party/bbq and have your picture taken (in clothes!)
  • Try to lose weight, and blog about it
  • Attend the final weigh-in at the end

I promise you that this will be simple, and it will be fun.

If you want to take part- please e-mail me at: karl@webnoodle.net

If you aren't heavy enough to take part in the contest yourself, then maybe you know someone who can.  Possibly your husband, your wife, your mom or brother.

This is a perfect opportunity to g

Business Listings on InsideWoodland

Business- it makes the world go round.

We know this, so we're adding a new feature on InsideWoodland- free business listings.

But wait- aren't there other business listing services out there?

Yes- yes there are.  But this is a bit different.

The main difference is that not only can you create a listing, but you can create an entire page to go with it.  You can add as much text, and as many pictures as you would like.  Seriously, if you want to put up 50 pictures, go ahead.  Write glowing prose about your business.  That's fine.  You can add links or anything else you would like.

Nobody else gives you all of that...and it is FREE.

What's in it for businesses?

These are super-targeted ads to the Woodland community.  And they are only available to Woodland businesses.  You won't be competing for eyeballs with businesses from Sacramento, Davis, etc.  We'll leave that to the phone book.

You have total control to create the type of listing you want.  Pictures, pictures, pictures!  Once again the phone book is going to charge you an arm and a leg just to make your name bold.  Here you can add as much as

Revisit La Superior Mercado

So, have you been wondering where me and my opinions have been hiding? I just got back from my very first trip to Mexico! My husband and I went down to Puerto Vallarta for a week, which was absolute heaven! We stayed in a neat place on the main strip in town, we shopped at this giant grocery store called Gigante, we ate fantastic food, rode the buses with the locals, went out into the countryside and the jungles and certainly drank a lot of tequila and cerveza.

When we got back to the States last night, I wanted to have anything to eat that didn't come with refried beans, but when we woke up this morning, we missed our routine of fantastic Mexican fare. We decided to take a trip out to the new(ish) La Superior Mercado on Court Street to check out our options.

Mr. Inside Woodland wrote the first story about this store, but I hadn't the real need to check it out since I was content with Nugget. However, once I got used to Mexican pastries baked fresh every morning, and Mexican style cheeses, meats and vegetables, we had to check it out ourselves.  There is an amazing selection of all of that there, so now we know when we need a fix of Mexico (and we don't want to choose from one of the hundreds of Mexican restaurants in town), we'll know where to go.

Also, it's a great place to practice our Spanish for our next trip...

Pioneer HS Lunchtime

Today when I drove by Pioneer High School at lunch time, I was happy to see an adult on the corner of Pioneer and Gibson who seemed to be there to prevent unauthorized students from leaving the campus. Whenever I go the the Bel Air shopping center I see numerous Pioneer Students there during school hours. I know that having someone "stationed" there won't prevent all truancy, but at least it is a start!
