People like animals- little dogs, big dogs- nasty little cats, even dirty birds. We like them, because they like us. I know I feel happy when I come home and my dog is jumping around like crazy- he thinks it's fantastic when I just come in the door. That's much better than when people think "ah hell...what's he doing here?"

So we need to honor our pets- give them their own space on InsideWoodland.com, and this is the place. In fact, we honor our pets so much, that we are having a contest!

We need pictures and biographies of 20 of the finest pets in Woodland. After we get 20 entries, the editorial staff at InsideWoodland.com will decide which one of the pets is the most deserving (or, which one of the owners is the most desperate). The winner will receive a gift certificate to one of the finest eating establishments in town. Seriously- if you send in a picture of your pet, and you are the winner- I'll mail you a gift certificate. Hey...this is costing me real money, so send in something good!

I'll start this out with a picture of my dog (who is ineligible to win the contest)

Noodle the Poodle

He wears a rain jacket whenever he needs to go outside. He lives in the Sycamore Ranch section of town, and he's pee'd on just about every tree in the neighborhood.

Winner!

This is an extremely late entry, but it is also the clear winner!

This is Beryl. Beryl's owner didn't send much more information other than the name- but that's not too important.

See- Beryl is wearing a hat.

All of the judges here are real suckers for animals wearing clothes. Especially dogs wearing hats. And the way she is wearing the hat is just about perfect. The only thing better would have been a dog with a cape.

Other Entries

This kitty's owner writes:

KiKi is just over one year old. I got her last year in mid September. She was about 2 weeks old and needed to be bottle fed. So, I brought her to school (I teach Biology) in order to feed her every three hours - needless to say, all the students fell in love with her, helped raise and train her, and she became the class cat. Best of all, she's colored like our school colors (Black fur, gold eyes, and white markings).

She has the run of the Science Building at Pioneer H.S. during the day and goes home with me at night/weekends. The students love having her in class and she really seems to make a difference in the behavior of the students....I have very few discipline problems!

KiKi recently celebrated her first birthday...with a big party after school.

Maggie

Here are some pictures of Maggie. Maggie is five years old and still kickin'! She likes to think she's better than all the other dogs and also thinks she can kick any one of their butts! She is only friendly when she has known you for about a month.

Shadow and Whisper

Shadow is the one with half a moustache. They are brothers and are seven years old. I got them when they were about two months old, from someone I work with. I was only going to take the one who would be Whisper, but when I walked away with him the one who became Shadow mewed so loud I could hear him across the parking lot. So, I took pity and went back and got him too. They were born in Dixon, and spent their formative years in Davis, where they got a good education about staying away from little kids. Then we moved to Woodland where they would have room to roam and neighbors to annoy who had big yards. We live near downtown. Whisper is so named because his meow is often like a whisper, and Shadow got his name because as a kitten he followed Whisper everywhere.

Warning! What you will see next may possibly be disturbing to some of our readers.

Zimba/Nikki The Two Headed Dog

The collie looking head is Zimba, and the little husky looking one is Nikki. Zimba is blind in his left eye, and can only hear very loud high pitch noises. He has arthritis in his hips. He runs into things a lot and gets knocked down frequently by our two year old German Shepard. In turn he snarls at her a lot. The typical grouchy old man that can't stand youngsters. Nikki still sees pretty well, and has about half her hearing. She is still pretty spry and will run around with the young dog. It just takes her four times as long to get there as the young dog. She is the matron who kindly tolerates the rambunctious young girl. My wife got Zimba from the Yolo County Animal Shelter when he was a puppy, and Nikki she got as a yearling from a neighbor. Both are born and bred in Woodland. They moved to the downtown area when Cheryl and I got married in 1999.

Editors Note: Okay, evidently these dogs were not born conjoined, I guess it was a surgical procedure undertaken after their birth. Either way, I am proud to be displaying this picture of a rare two-headed dog on this website.

Okay, the Freakshow is over- back to regular pets

This is Phoebe. She enjoys going on walks and jumping over the fence. She lives with her two sisters Piper, and Lahelle. We think Phoebe is a border collie mixed with a golden retriever, or something like that. I have had her for about 4 years now and I got her at Woodland's pound. Phoebe sleeps with me every night, and we take showers together when she smells and needs to be cleaned, which is a lot. She pees on my floor when she gets mad at me. she can jump a 6 foot fence and can somehow get past the electric fence. Phoebe is the coolest dog ever. When you kiss her when she is sleeping she starts growling, it is so cute. I love Phoebe and I will always love her.

This photo depicts our cat Jiggs when she was a little over a year old.
Maggie (our dog) came into our life a few months before Jiggs and my husband said that if we got another cat, her name would have to be Jiggs because of the cartoon Bringing Up Father whose main characters are Maggie & Jiggs.

Maggie and Jiggs romped together often in the back yard, and the house. As she got larger, Maggie would tease Jiggs and then just stand still and let Jiggs attack/grab her around the neck. Maggie died this last July and Jiggs, who is now 11, is training a new puppy (Carmen) who has a lot more energy than Jiggs is accustomed to.

The other photo shows Jiggs on a board we set up in a majestic Bradford Pear tree that grew in our back yard. Jiggs has a wonderful coat and looks beautiful with the spring blossoms behind her. She is playful, affectionate, and has a great personality. We live near the Woodland cemetery.

This is Carmen, our new puppy who Jiggs (our cat, shown above) is helping to raise. We located Carmen through PetFinder.com and adopted her from Lake County Animal Services on Labor Day 2004. She was from a litter of 13 pups left in a box at a grocery store. All of the pups looked very different, so we're not sure of her breed. She has a wirey, curly coat and is probably part Lab. The vet says she won't get much over 40 pounds, which is much smaller than our previous dogs, but she's a joy. We sometimes call her Carmencita because she is so little.

Carmen loves bugs. Our patio is bug free. A friend suggested that we rent her out. She especially loves to chase moths and butterflies, springing in the air to catch them. We took her on her first hike a couple of weeks ago and she did really well off leash. She's responsive, very aware of her environment, bright, and a well adjusted pup. Her eyes are starting to turn more brown than black and the toy in her mouth is long gone.

From Ashley-:

This is my cat Cloud he lives in paradise and is very spoiled. He sleeps the whole day and loves Fancy Feast. We want to put him in the Fancy Feast contest so he can be that cat. He is deaf and is 3 years old.

We looked for a white cat with blue eyes for 8 years. My sisters boyfriend found Cloud and we bought him when we lived in Wisconsin. He moved to Woodland with us. He loves car rides, and breaks about everything in our house. It doesn't scare him because he can't hear it .

This is my kickass fish Steve. He is a fantail goldfish and is from Woodland's very own Wal-mart. Currently he resides in a bowl next to my TV where he can see the monitor and watch LAUNCHcast videos. Sometimes, to spice his day up, I move his bowl to where he can see the TV and watch movies. His favorite seems to be National Lampoon's Vacation, because they are trying to get to Wally World, which sort of sounds like Wal-mart.

Steve has also shown a great interest in the Xbox game Halo 2. You can tell when Steve is excited because he zips about his bowl in circles leaving his little paper-like limbs to ripple behind. He wishes he could be a gamer like his grandpa, but unfortunately his little fins prevent him from being about to push the buttons : - [.

Sundays and Wednesdays Steve takes a big trip to the bathroom to have his bowl cleaned. During this period, he gets to run into the walls of a drinking glass and freak while watching his little home be torn to pieces. Then, after housekeeping his finished, he gets a big meal of Tetra-fin goldfish flakes, which seems to be the ONLY food he likes (this was determined after banana, crackers, AND spinach was offered, and was accompanied with no excited-Steve behavior.

Steve rocks.

I normaly would find a two headed dog rather odd but there was a time were I had a two headed pig up at my dads farm house and I've also had more then one kitten be born with only three legs or four legs and six toes on each front paw, so a dog with two heads is nothing to me but I have found over the years that you have to feed both mouths and not just one, just think of it as having two dogs rather then one dog.
